Age and Disability Capacity Program launch of Humanitarian Inclusion Standards for Older People and People with Disabilities

About the Humanitarian Inclusion Standards

Developed by the Age and Disability Capacity Program, a consortium of 7 humanitarian agencies, and funded by the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID), the Humanitarian Inclusion Standards for Older People and People with Disabilities are an essential tool for strengthening accountability and engagement in humanitarian response. With input from 139 organization in 26 countries, the standards are the first-of-its kind, designed to provide actionable guidance on programming, training, and advocacy.

The standards consist of nine key inclusion standards and seven sets of sector-specific inclusion standards for protection; water, sanitation and hygiene; food security and livelihoods; nutrition; shelter, settlement and household items; health; and education. Each standard comes with key actions, guidance, tools and resources, and case studies illustrating how older people and people with disabilities have been included in humanitarian responses.

These standards are designed to be used in conjunction with the Sphere Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response, the Core Humanitarian Standard for Quality and Accountability (CHS), and other Sphere companion standards. They also complement Protection Mainstreaming: the process of incorporating protection principles and promoting meaningful access, safety and dignity in humanitarian aid.
