At HelpAge USA, we are deeply concerned about the devastating global impacts of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funding freeze, particularly its consequences for older people, who are often among the hardest hit in humanitarian crises. The sudden loss of funding for critical programs means that millions of older people—many of whom already face increased poverty, food insecurity, and barriers to healthcare—are now at even greater risk. While HelpAge USA and HelpAge International do not currently receive U.S. government funding, we stand in solidarity with our partners and the many communities who have been affected by this crisis.
One HelpAge Global Network member in Malawi has reported that their USAID-supported humanitarian cash assistance program—a lifeline for preventing food insecurity among older people and others most at risk—has been suspended. Others have shared how their partners and communities are struggling as organizations that provide essential services, from healthcare to emergency relief, are forced to halt vital programs.
Beyond immediate funding cuts, the administration’s broader policies against diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and gender identity threaten the future of global health and humanitarian efforts. Any funding that is eventually restored will likely exclude or deprioritize marginalized groups, including older people, individuals with disabilities, women, and LGBTQI+ communities.
“The funding freeze is not just a bureaucratic issue—it has real and immediate consequences for the world’s most marginalized people, including older people,” said Cindy Cox-Roman, President & CEO of HelpAge USA. “From food insecurity to healthcare access, millions depend on these resources. The longer this freeze continues, the deeper the suffering will be.”
In response, HelpAge USA is:
- Engaging with global partners to assess and document the specific impacts of the funding freeze on older people and using this information to inform advocacy efforts.
- Strengthening our global aging advocacy coalition, with a focus on U.S. congressional engagement, UN processes, and other advocacy channels.
- Expressing solidarity with USAID staff and organizations working on behalf of marginalized communities.
Humanitarian aid must remain inclusive, equitable, and centered on those who need it most. We urge policymakers to recognize the severe human cost of this funding freeze and take immediate action to restore critical assistance.
