We help older people in the world’s poorest communities.

HelpAge USA’s mission is to advance the wellbeing and inclusion of older people in the world’s poorest communities. We are part of the HelpAge Global Network, which has a 40-year track record of working with older people to implement life-changing programs. Our vision is a world in which all people can lead dignified, healthy, and secure lives regardless of how old they are or where they live.

Why we do this

All too often, no one else is there to help.

No other global organization is entirely devoted to assisting the world’s most vulnerable older people. They’re often overlooked by governments and international organizations, and many have no financial security. From providing COVID-19 kits at the world’s largest refugee camp to preventing violence and abuse, HelpAge helps protect and empower older people.

The world is aging, yet many older people are ignored and abused.

The world is experiencing the largest and fastest demographic age shift in history. By 2030, more people will be over 60 than under 10. Despite this, older people are often excluded from research studies used for planning by governments and humanitarian aid organizations. This invisibility adds to the discrimination, violence, and abuse that older people — especially women — often face.

Bringing the value and capabilities of older people to light will help all of us.

Even though older people comprise the largest portion of the poor, they have fewer opportunities to earn income because their value and capabilities are misunderstood and underestimated. Yet they have much to contribute, helping all of society instead of being a burden to it — the current misconception.
