Older People and Climate Justice
Older people are on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
Older people can be among those most at risk during climate-induced weather changes and disasters. Research and data show that older people face particular health risks and higher rates of death from extreme heat. During hurricanes and floods, many older people face barriers to evacuations and rescue, including due to social isolation and abandonment. Climate mitigation strategies and disaster planning and response regularly fail to consult with older people and account for their specific situations.
At the same time, older people’s deep knowledge about what communities need to survive and thrive or their creative solutions to climate change are often overlooked. This can be due to ageism and false narratives pitting youth against older generations in what must be a united movement to ensure climate justice for all.
Together with our global network members and partners, HelpAge works to improve access for older people around the world to disaster response interventions, national risk reduction planning efforts, and global climate action processes.
