Across Africa
Across Africa, HelpAge global network members collaborate to strengthen health and care, respond to crises, expand social protection, and support older people in the face of climate change.
- In Kenya and Tanzania, we help older farmers use local wisdom and skills to grow food and cope better with droughts and bad weather.
- In Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Togo, global network partners—working alongside our Older People’s Associations (OPAs)—improved health outreach and services for older people, developed training centers for healthcare workers and caregivers, and expanded community-based services for older people.
- In Ethiopia, Tesfa Social Development Organization partnered with HelpAge Ethiopia to pilot WHO’s Integrated Care for Older People (ICOPE) and strengthen geriatric care infrastructure, marking an important policy win.
Across Latin America
In Latin America and the Caribbean, HelpAge global network partners collaborate through national and sub-regional networks to advance older people’s rights, healthy aging, and climate-resilient communities.
- In Colombia, network leadership contributed to the country’s accession to the Inter-American Convention on the Rights of Older Persons and ongoing pension reform discussions.
- In Venezuela, our global network partner Convite monitors rights violations affecting older people and elevates humanitarian protection through national and regional advocacy.
- Members in cities such as Bogotá and Mexico City are advancing age-friendly and climate-resilient community initiatives, with strong participation from older people.
Across the Middle East
Across the Middle East, HelpAge global network members work in complex policy and humanitarian contexts to strengthen care systems, protect older people’s rights, and advance healthy aging.
- In places like Pakistan and Lebanon, our OPAs set up specialized support for health issues, like dementia and mental health, to improve wellbeing.
- In countries like Yemen, our partners help people access pensions and financial aid from the government so they have a stable income and can cope with extreme poverty.
In conflict-affected areas like Syria, our teams deliver timely support, addressing severe economic distress and ensuring older people, especially those with disabilities, receive essential aid.
Across Asia
Our global network partners work across Asia to improve older people’s lives and raise awareness about the issues that affect them. We advocate for social protection, ensure older people can access health and care services, support Older People’s Associations (OPAs), and help older people affected by natural disasters and conflict.
- In Vietnam, network members helped pioneer Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs—community-based groups supporting health, income generation, social inclusion, and care. Adopted by the Government of Vietnam as national policy, the model now operates nationwide, forming the country’s largest home- and community-care system for older people.
- The Vietnamese model has been endorsed regionally, with countries across Asia exploring how to adapt community-based, rights-focused approaches to aging in their own contexts.
