Jane Buchanan

Senior Advocacy Advisor

Jane Buchanan has worked as a human rights researcher, trainer, and advocate for over 20 years, including 17 years at Human Rights Watch. She has conducted investigations into human rights abuses in more than 20 countries around the world and lived and worked in Russia for 5 years. She has advocated with top officials in government and business leaders to push for lasting human rights change.

Her areas of expertise include armed conflict and humanitarian crises; business, sport, and human rights; and the rights of marginalized groups including children, people with disabilities, and older people. Over her career, Jane has also trained several hundred researchers in human rights methodology, evidentiary standards, interviewing, security, writing, and advocacy. She has an M.A in international affairs and economics from the Johns Hopkins University School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS). She is fluent in Russian.
